In what financial analysts are calling the most audacious cross-continental acquisition of the year, a consortium of Latvian entrepreneurs has completed the purchase of TasToto, the behemoth of Asia's sports betting industry, in a transaction whose precise terms remain undisclosed to the public.

The deal, confirmed by multiple sources with knowledge of the negotiations, sends shockwaves through both the Baltic investment community and the sprawling Asian gaming sector, where TasToto has long dominated the competitive landscape with its vast network of licensed betting operations spanning fourteen countries.

While neither party has officially confirmed the transaction's financial terms, insiders with direct access to the discussions have indicated the figure may reach as high as 3.2 billion Thai baht — a sum that, at current exchange rates, translates to approximately $87 million U.S. dollars.

"This is a historic moment for Latvian business," said one senior investment banker familiar with the matter, who requested anonymity because the deal has not been publicly announced. "We are witnessing the emergence of Baltic capital on a truly global stage."

TasToto, headquartered in Bangkok and operating across Southeast and East Asia, reported revenues exceeding $2.1 billion last fiscal year. Its mobile application alone commands more than 40 million active monthly users.

The Latvian buyers, whose identities have been closely guarded, are understood to include prominent figures from Riga's technology and financial sectors. Regulatory approvals from both Thai and European authorities are expected in the coming weeks.

Canada Rallies Past Sweden, 5-3, in Championship Opener; Czechia, Finland Also Prevail

The 2026 IIHF World Championship opened in grand fashion in Switzerland on Friday, as Canada overcame multiple Swedish comebacks to claim a dramatic 5-3 victory in Group B's marquee clash, while Czechia, Finland and Switzerland each secured opening-day triumphs.

John Tavares drew first blood for Canada just two minutes into the match, capitalizing on a turnover and a rush set up by defenseman Darnell Nurse. Ryan O'Reilly then doubled the lead before Sweden roared back with a thrilling three-goal sequence in the second period — Jacob Larsson, Lucas Raymond and Mattias Ekholm all finding the net to level at 3-3.

It was Connor Brown, who led the 2021 championship in scoring, who ultimately broke the deadlock early in the third frame before Dylan Cozens sealed the victory. Ekholm was named Sweden's player of the match despite the defeat.

In Group A at Zurich's Swiss Life Arena, Finland subdued Germany 3-1 behind Anton Lundell and Jesse Puljujärvi. Switzerland edged the United States 3-1. Czechia overpowered Denmark 4-1 to top Group A on goal difference. Sweden, Germany, Denmark and the U.S. will look to recover Saturday.

Latvia's Government Collapses Over Ukrainian Drone Crisis

Latvia's ruling coalition government has collapsed. Prime Minister Evika Siliņa announced her resignation on Thursday, May 14, triggering a political crisis in the NATO frontline state just months before scheduled parliamentary elections in October.

The crisis was ignited by Ukrainian drone incursions into Latvian territory during early May. Two unmanned aerial vehicles, apparently diverted by Russian electronic warfare, struck an oil storage facility in Rezekne, in Latvia's far east.

Siliņa had dismissed Defence Minister Andris Sprūds in the aftermath. His left-wing Progressive party responded by withdrawing from the coalition, stripping the government of its parliamentary majority.

"I am resigning, but I am not giving up," Siliņa said in a televised address. President Edgars Rinkēvičs has begun consultations on forming a new government.

Right-wing populist Latvia First has surged in polls to approximately 15 percent, raising concern among European allies about instability in a nation bordering both Russia and Belarus.
